Installation Guide
Thank you for choosing Thompson & Timber Custom Mailboxes.
Tools & Materials Needed
- Phillips screwdriver or drill with Phillips bit
- Shovel or post-hole digger
- Level
- Tape measure
- Dirt or fast-setting concrete (optional)
Before You Begin
- Call local utility marking services before digging to avoid underground lines or pipes.
- Recommended install depth: 21.5 in (546 mm).
- Install on firm, undisturbed soil whenever possible.
Installation Steps
- Remove Side Screws - Unscrew the two gray Phillips-head screws on each side of the mailbox (4 total). Set aside for reuse.
- Insert Post Legs - Slide the two treated 2x4 legs into the slots on the bottom of the mailbox until they reach the marked insertion line.
- Secure the Legs - Reinstall the four screws into their original holes and tighten until snug.
- Position the Mailbox - Place the assembled mailbox in the desired location. Use a level to ensure it sits straight front-to-back and side-to-side.
- Mark Hole Locations - With the mailbox held level, mark the ground directly below each leg.
- Dig Post Holes - Dig two holes at the marked spots to a depth of 21.5 in (or until the bottom of the mailbox will sit at ground level). Use caution to avoid utilities.
- Set and Level the Post - Place the mailbox legs into the holes. Re-check level in both directions and adjust soil depth as needed.
- Backfill and Compact - Fill each hole with removed soil or concrete, packing firmly as you go to remove air gaps. Recheck level during filling.
Helpful Tips
- Soil: pack using the handle end of a shovel.
- Concrete: pack with a small garden trowel.
- Periodically check for level after seasonal ground movement.
